About the Honorees
Dr. Femi Babarinde
Lifetime Achievement Award
He is on the faculty of Thunderbird School of Global Management, Arizona State University in Phoenix, Arizona, His academic degrees are in Economics, Political Science, and International Relations from Wittenberg University and Miami University. He has authored research papers/books, and participates in other academic activities.
He was a member of two delegations of ASU faculty, staff, and administrators that visited Ghana in March 2023 and Ethiopia in November 2023, to explore collaborative relationships with universities in the two African countries.
Also, he taught Thunderbird field seminars in South Africa between 1997 and 2017, and in Kenya between 2010 and 2013. The seminars were designed to put Africa and business opportunities in Africa on the radar of Thunderbird students, many of whom subsequently returned to Africa to work, or are doing business in or with Africa.
In 2003, he guided students in one of the aforementioned field seminars to create a signature chocolate bar for the school, the first of its kind at a business school anywhere in the world. It emanated from a partnership between Thunderbird and an all-women South-African micro-enterprise, which enabled the company to export the product to the U.S.
Since 2020, he has taught a program that comprised recent women college graduates or women in the early part of their career from across primarily Africa, as well as the Middle East and Asia. The annual, highly competitive, program is designed to enhance participants’ soft skills and competitiveness.
Starting in 2016, he has presented to ASU-embedded Mandela Fellows during the summer. Established in 2014, the Mandela Washington Fellowship is a flagship program of the U.S. Department of State for young African leaders, designed to stimulate economic growth and development across Africa.
He is one of the founding members of the African Association of Arizona (AFASA)— an inclusive organization— and has served on its executive in different capacities over the years. AFASA’s mission is to promote the awareness of Africa and African cultures through educational and cultural activities in Arizona. He has been involved in organizing AFASA’s annual African Festivals in the Phoenix metropolitan area since the late-1990s. Likewise, he was involved in organizing a daylong conference on Africa in December 1997 at the Phoenix Plaza, and a three-day international conference on business opportunities in Africa at the Thunderbird School of Global Management in February 1993. As well, he has participated in sundry AFASA charitable initiatives that served and benefited the African community in Africa and in Arizona.
