  3. How I Turned My Health Around and Found Balance

Several years ago, I was overweight and prediabetic.

It was a wake-up call.

I decided it was time for a change.

No more excuses.

I revamped my diet, hit the gym regularly, and started diving deep into nutrition.

I learned about different body types, experimented with food, and figured out what worked best for me.

Education was key and true to my addiction for seeking knowledge to empower myself, I enrolled in a Personal Trainer Certification Program to challenge myself even further.

I took classes, read extensively, and absorbed everything I could about health and wellness.

For me, it wasn’t just about cutting weight but more importantly about gaining a new perspective on life.

Now, staying active is part of who I am.

Even on vacations, my prerequisite for a hotel must be a full option gym and , for the last few years, I made it a point to weigh myself everyday on vacation and DO NOT return with extra weight.

But I haven’t forgotten my roots.

I still enjoy African events and our delicious cuisine.

Yes, African dishes aren’t typically calorie-counted, and it’s easy to overindulge because, let’s face it, it’s delicious!

But today, I approach food differently.

I indulge with intention and mindfulness, allowing me to enjoy the flavors of my heritage without compromising my health.

What about you?

How has your cultural background shaped your health journey as an African immigrant in the U.S. or Europe and Asia as well.
